Event description

Holiday cookies in the shape of snowflakes, candy canes, and gingerbread people.

Being able to contribute to a celebration that revolves around food is an important rite of passage for any young adult, even those with vision loss. When you understand the science, the art, and the chemistry involved in baking, it changes from just following directions to understanding how and why professional bakers take the steps they do to ensure success.

You can beat the challenges of baking with vision loss by learning tactile tools and techniques to prepare and bake a delicious treat that you can share with your family and friends.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn the basic communication expectations in a commercial kitchen/professional bakery and use that skill throughout the workshop.
  • Set up a safe, clean, and efficient work area.
  • Measure ingredients accurately and without waste.
  • Discover the role of leavening ingredients in baking.
  • Roll dough to a predictable desired height
  • Explore the anatomy of an oven and how it works, including adaptive strategies to operate it correctly and confidently.
  • Gain an understanding of gluten: how it’s formed and the role it plays.
  • Answer the question of why you should mix wet and dry ingredients separately before combining them.

In addition to being a place to create a batch of delicious, handmade cookies, this workshop is an excellent opportunity to explore traditional and non-traditional employment options and career pathways in the culinary arts that meet your strengths and interests. When you are done, you’ll have learned a skill that could get a potential employer in the baking and pastry industry to consider hiring you.
