Event description

A person carves a turkey at Thanksgiving dinner. Several people can be seen sitting around the table. The table is set with festive plates and candles.

All children, even those with vision loss, would benefit from early and ongoing food preparation activities as soon as it can be safely mastered.

Children with vision loss are often banned from the kitchen where well-meaning family members caution of the dangers of the kitchen: “You can get burned or cut in the kitchen, so it is best if you stay out.”

But children can be taught basic cooking skills at a very young age if given proper information, strategies, and equipment. Parents of children with vision loss, who do not have vision loss themselves, could also benefit from this workshop as they will be introduced to basic cooking tools and strategies that will allow them to offer supervised opportunities to their children leading to increased independence and contributions to family meal preparation.

The parent and child (the Tasty Team) will be introduced to the science and safety of basic heat principles around cooking with vision loss and will use a common kitchen appliance (a toaster) to produce a delicious, cooked food outcome.

A “Tasty Teams” culinary tool collection, assembled by The Blind Kitchen will go home with each “Tasty Team” so the skills learned in this workshop can be practiced in their own homes. Each child will also receive their own chef hat to mark the successful completion of the workshop.
